2 Before Calculating Work…
You first have to decide if what you are doing IS work. Rule 1: The object must move when the force is applied. Rule 2: The object must move in the same direction as the force being applied to the object

3 Calculating Work Work = Force x Distance Work is measured in joules
Force is measured in Newtons Distance is measured in meters Work (j) = Force (N) x Distance (m)

4 Try This: 3. What amount of work has been done if you apply 60 Newtons of force to lift an object one meter? Work (j) = Force (N) x Distance (m) 60 j = 60 N x 1 m

5 Try This: 4. How much work have you done if you apply 10 Newtons of force to push a box 2 meters across the floor? 20 j = 10 N x 2 m

6 Try This: 5. How much work have you done by carrying your 13 Newton backpack 10 meters across the room? None because the backpack is not moving in the same direction as the force being applied to hold the backpack up.

7 Try This: 6. How much work have you done if you carry a 2 Newton object 10 meters across the room and place it up 1 meter on a shelf? 2 j = 2 N x 1 m

8 Here’s a few student examples:
How much work have you done if you push your brother to get him out of your room? He weighs 50 N and he is 2 meters from the door. 50 N x 2 M = 100 J

9 How much work have you done if you take a 3 N hat and lift it 2 meters onto your head, then slide down a 40 meter hill? 3 N x 2 M = 6 J

10 . How much work have you done by carrying a 15 N backpack with 20 N of weights in it 20 meters up a hill? 15 N N = 35 N 35 N x 20 M = 700 J
