considerations and initiatives

2 Historical Background
Puerto Ricans have been serving in our Nation’s military service since 1899, right after the U.S. occupation of the island as a result of the Hispanic American War. In our strong and long culture of military service, we can point out the following: 8 Medals of Honor Congressional Gold Medal to the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the The Borinqueneers , who have received the following acknowledgements: 10 distinguished Service Crosses 250 silver stars Over 600 Bronze Stars More than 2,700 Purple Hearts Historical Background

3 The Department of Defense indicates that Hispanics form the 3rd largest ethnic population in the Armed Forces. 11% of active personnel 10% of the Reserve As of fiscal year 2014, there are 93,260 registered veterans in Puerto Rico. 4 Challenges of the Veterans Population in Puerto Rico
Data from the National Allicance on Mental Illness (NAMI) suggests that Hispanic Vietnam veterans, especially Puerto Rican Vietnam Veterans, have a higher risk for PTSD and experience more severe PTSD symptoms. Of the 93,260 registered veterans, 29,853 are Vietnam Veterans Military sexual trauma in female veterans who are disproportionately represented in comparison with male veterans. Of the 93,260 registered veterans, only 5,331 are female. Despite the presence of VA facilities in Puerto Rico, there are major challenges in terms of service and resources. One of the areas of major concerns is with regards to treatment for mental health conditions. Housing issues: 2013 HUD census reflected that from 1,166 homeless people in San Juan, 61 were veterans Puerto Rico is excluded from the $36 millions appointed for exmilitaries without housing. 5 Initiatives in Puerto Rico
Resolution Number 50 To direct the Committee on Veteran’s Affairs of the Senate of Puerto Rico to conduct a thorough investigation regarding the mental health of the veterans of the United States Armed Forces residing in Puerto Rico Resolution Number 262 To direct the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs of the Senate of Puerto Rico to conduct a thorough investigation that includes the establishment, funding, and operating costs of veterans special courts; and for other related purpouses.
