2 Milk and Wine Applications Feed and Forage Applications
AGENDA What is FOSS NIR or FTIR? Milk and Wine Applications Feed and Forage Applications Dairy Applications Meat Applications In-line Applications Biofuel Applications Discussion

3 What is FOSS FOSS was founded in 1956 as N. Foss Electric A/S by Nils Foss FOSS develops rapid, reliable and dedicated analytical solutions for routine testing More than 100 patents More than 20 world first introductions More than 130 Master of Science and more than 20 PhDs Nils Foss, founder

4 NIR or FTIR A Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) is the infrared absorption spectroscopy method preferably used to measure constituents in liquid samples such as milk and wine. The method is easy, fast and accurate, combining high sensitivity with a full spectrum, enabling instrument standardization and the use of calibrations for multiple instruments Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is an accurate and rapid analysis method that is well suited for quantitative determination of the major constituents in most types of food and agricultural products. This reliable and non-destructive analysis method uses the wavelength region from ~750nm to 2500nm of the electromagnetic spectrum and can be configured for both transmission and diffuse reflection measurements. FTIR – transmitance and works well for liquid NIR – mostly reflectansee and works well for non homogwnuos sample

5 Milk Applications Milk Cream Whey Yoghurt Fortified Milk & Whey Quark
Dessert & Ice Cream Abnormality Screening Module Targeted models for adulteration Live-stock breeding (Combi)?

6 Milk Applications

7 Milk Applications The IR signal is composed by wavelengths of nanometers Interferograms are added together and averaged. The resulting interferogram is processed by Fourier Transformation into single beam spectrum

8 Wine Applications Grape juice: Sanitary index BRIX Ethanol Glucose
Fructose Extract Volatile acid CO2 SO2 Methanol Acidity Density Polyphenol (Folin C) Potassium And many more

9

10 Feed and Forage Applications
Vegetal by products Cereals\Grain Vegetal protein Meals Dry Pet Food Animal by-product Compound FEED Etc.

11 Feed and Forage Applications

12 Dairy Applications Cheese Yoghurt, Quark and similar products
Salad dressings and condiments Butter and dairy spreads

13 Dairy Applications Is based on NIT technology
NIT is preferable for dairy products 1-40 sub samples Only one calibration per component per product due to Artificial Neural Network

14 Meat Applications Fat Moisture Collagen Salt Ash Starch pH
Carbohydrates Initial

15 In-line Applications Solutions for many kinds of products: from Grain to Mayonnaise, from Flour to Milk High resolution NIR Technology Measurement mode: Reflection Wavelength range is nm Spectral dispersion – 1.1nm/pixel Detector: InGaAs Diode Array Ever expanding calibration

16 Biofuel Applications

17 Biofuel Applications (liquid)
Quartz cuvette Wavelength range nm NIR transmittance Spectral resolution 0.5nm Wavelength accuracy 0.05nm FFA Moisture Phospohorous K232 K270 PV
