3 President Polk’s War Announcement May 11,1846
The cup of forbearance had been exhausted even before the recent information from the frontier of the Del Norte. But now, after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commenced, and that the two nations are now at war. As war exists, and, notwithstanding all our efforts to avoid it, exists by the act of Mexico herself, we are called upon by every consideration of duty and patriotism to vindicate with decision the honor, the rights, and the interests of our country In further vindication of our rights and defense of our territory, I invoke the prompt action of Congress to recognize the existence of the war, and to place at the disposition of the Executive the means of prosecuting the war with vigor, and thus hastening the restoration of peace. . .

8 POV-James K Polk James K Polk viewed the Mexican-American War as a just war and a war fought for the ideals of the country Polk’s view in this speech is that the Mexican-American War is being fought to defend Americans and our rights. However, Polk’s POV is highly influenced by the idea of Manifest Destiny and expanding slavery. This speech was given to convince Congress that this was a war of patriotism when really it was a war of nationalism.

16 California Gold Rush HOW DID THE GOLD RUSH AFFECT THE ARGUMENT ABOUT THE WEST NOW???

17

18 California Gold Rush The California Gold Rush definitely appeared to increase prosperity in the West. Many of the Gold Rush Miners who showed up initially struck it rich. To many small farmers and laborers back east, California represented the ultimate promise of economic opportunity. Most of these 49ers ended up failing to strike it rich but the city of San Francisco ended up becoming a prosperous town that fed the Gold Rush and a place where merchants and others who provided services could prosper. Even Chinese immigrants, despite racial prejudice, were able to establish some level of success and community, escaping feudal China. This all of course came at the price of the native tribes and Californios. Indian tribes were intentionally hunted and massacred by whites. Californios who lived there before the rush saw there land stolen and their rights taken away by the influx of miners.
