1 Stevenson shows that Jekyll:
Is keen to keep Hyde hidden – even from the completely trustworthy Utterson. Probably feels ashamed of his alter-ego and his “abominable” behaviour (Contextually, Soho, drinking dens, music halls prostitutes – because of the Victorians’ heightened sense of propriety). Feels that he can control Hyde – which is ironic considering what happens towards the end of the novella. (Contextually, the animal within coming to the fore – connotations of the new Victorian theory of Darwinism). Wants Utterson to honour the terms of his will to look after Hyde. Elsewhere in the text: Does not want to change into Hyde after the Carew murder Has to hide away as he cannot control the transformation – the scene at the window.
