Background:
The use of mobile health technologies continues to expand and evolve to improve the health of different populations with varying health needs. Curriculum standards have mandated incorporating nursing informatics and technology competencies for all levels of nursing education geared towards full engagement in the unfolding digital era of health care. Innovations in technology, such as app creation, offer mechanisms to engage nursing students in a variety of learning activities incorporating informatics competencies.
Assignment:
This assignment was utilized in an undergraduate pediatric course as an innovative and creative clinical group project to engage youth in health promotion via the creation of mobile apps.
Rationale:
The assignment demonstrated that social media is a platform that can assist nursing students to gain skills in professional communication and writing competencies. Additionally, incorporating creative social media enables students to understand the human experience; one of the underlying principles of professional nursing and intrinsic to affective learning.
Outcomes:
Students were enthusiastic about an alternative clinical project that utilized their creativity. The projects were well received by children and families.
