Learning target I can describe an Igneous rock and how it was formed. Today I am… analyzing the formation and physical properties of Igneous rocks. 4 The word igneous comes from the latin word for “fire.”
Igneous rocks Form from magma or lava that have cooled and solidified. Granite, obsidian, pumice The word igneous comes from the latin word for “fire.”

5 Lava: Magma that flows onto the Earth’s surface.
Igneous rocks Magma: Hot liquid that forms when a rock partially or completely melts (may include mineral crystals.) Lava: Magma that flows onto the Earth’s surface.

6 Igneous rocks Ways a rock can melt: - Temperature: An increase in temperature can cause the minerals in a rock to melt.

7 Igneous Rock Ways a rock can melt: - Pressure: When hot rocks rise to shallow depths, pressure is released and the minerals can melt.

8 Igneous Rock Ways a rock can melt: - Composition: Water and carbon dioxide enter a rock that is close to melting point.

9 Igneous rocks form from cooled lava on the earth’s surface.
Igneous rock also forms from cooled magma deep within the earth’s crust. Granite and basalt are the most common intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Granite Basalt

10 Igneous Rocks Felsic: Light-weight, light-colored rocks that are rich in silicon, aluminum, sodium, and potassium. Mafic: Dark-colored, heavy rocks that are rich in iron, magnesium, and calcium. Igneous rocks can differ from one another depending on what they are made from and how they are cooled.

Forms when lava cools and solidifies on the Earth’s surface. Usually has a very fine-grained or even glassy texture. Volcanic

Forms when magma cools beneath the Earth’s surface. Usually has a course-grained texture. Plutonic

The sculpting was done by first blasting away tons of rock with dynamite. Workers then sat in hanging "swing seats," and used jackhammers, drills, hammers, and other tools to do the finishing work. Mt. Rushmore was carved out of Igneous rock. 14 years to build
