1 Session 7: Finding a Memoir to Pursue in the Writer’s Notebook
Concept: Reading Immersion and Drafting Memoirs

2 Teaching Point Copy in your Notebook: Memoirists explore the internal and external journey. They revise to identify, explore deeper, connect, and enhance the relationship of these parallel journeys.

3 What does this mean? Your NB is a rich resource – by rereading it, you can discover the topics, themes, structures, and techniques you have explored over our first 6 sessions. This re-reading work is the first step in planning/finding a memoir or memoir topic to pursue for REVISION AND PUBLICATION (the last step in becoming a memoirist!)

4 Let’s look at mine… Take a look at my NB – think of this as a guided tour. Watch as I think through some of my work and bookmark the ones that I want to take further Think about why I am connected to certain entries – and why one might be MORE IMPORTANT for me to choose for revision and publication

5 Independent Practice Mini-Task #1: You will need 2-3 different color stickies (big ones!) Reread and bookmark your notebook identifying entries you would like to revise toward publication. Also notice and write a note to yourself on your bookmark stating: The connection you have to the entry Why you are selecting this entry (If possible) how you plan to revise the memoir

6 Turn & Talk – Share with a Partner
Now, read the entry you have selected to REVISE and PUBLISH to a partner Explain why this particular write is important to you. After sharing, complete the short “Choosing Your Memoir” handout and turn in to the basket before you leave

7 Homework TYPE UP your chosen memoir and bring a copy to our class_________________! This is MANDATORY!!! (30 point h/w grade)
