1 The Circulatory System

2 Blood is composed (made up) of:
- Plasma - Red Blood cells - White Blood cells - Platelets

3 Plasma transports heat and chemicals( like food, hormones and carbon dioxide)

4 Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body

5 White blood cells fight disease

6 Platelets help the form blood clots

7 The three types of blood vessels are:
Arteries Veins Capillaries

8 Arteries Carry blood away from the heart Blood is under high pressure
Walls of arteries are very thick and strong

9 Veins Carry blood to the heart The blood pressure is low
Veins have thinner and weaker walls than arteries They have valves to stop the blood flowing backwards

10 Capillaries Tiny blood vessels that have very thin walls, which allows materials to pass in and out of them

12 How blood flows around the body
Lungs Heart Body

13 The heart is divided into FOUR chambers
Right Ventricle Right Atrium Left Atrium Left Ventricle The heart is divided into FOUR chambers

14 The heart has four major blood vessels
PULMONARY Artery AORTA VENA CAVA PULMONARY VEIN VENA CAVA The heart has four major blood vessels

15 PULMONARY Artery AORTA PULMONARY VEIN VENA CAVA

16 OXYGEN in the lungs collected by the blood
The oxygenated blood travels along the pulmonary vein to the LEFT ATRIUM pulmonary vein

17 The aorta carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body

18 Inside every cell oxygen and food are used in RESPIRATION to produce
WATER + CARBON DIOXIDE + ENERGY

19 The vena cava sends deoxygenated blood back to the heart

20 Carries deoxygenated blood back to the lungs again!
The PULMONARY ARTERY Carries deoxygenated blood back to the lungs again! PULMONARY ARTERY

21 Pulmonary artery (brings blood to the lungs)
Aorta (brings blood to the body) Vena cava (brings blood from the body) Pulmonary vein (brings blood from the lungs)

22 Does exercise effect your pulse rate?
Beats per minute Minute 1 Minute 2 Minute 3 AVERAGE Pulse per minute after 2 minutes of running on the spot Conclusions – what did you learn from your results ? Can you try to explain why this happened?

23 The functions of the blood
(1) Blood transports many substances around our body – oxygen, food, waste materials, hormones

24 The functions of the blood
(2) Our blood helps us to defend against disease by destroying harmful bacteria and viruses.

25 The temperature of the blood
(3)Our blood keeps our body temperature constant, at 37OC. This changes when you are sick
