Ice Melting is a Chemical or Physical Change? You have 2 minutes to work as a team to melt 5 pieces of ice. You may use a variety of techniques to melt your ice. Each team that successfully melts their ice in in 2 minutes will be earn a science immunity tool. Teacher Set up Notes: Have a cooler or bucket of ice from the lunchroom. Provide students with a variety of materials such as, plastic bags, paper towels, paper bags, hand towels, masking tape, aluminum foil, or other materials you have available in your class or at home. Chef Rabob poured salt and sugar into two identical containers. She forgot to label the containers. The sugar has been recalled due to contamination at the plant where it was made. So she cannot taste to see which container has salt and which has sugar. Design a science experiment using your knowledge of chemical and physical changes to determine which container has the sugar. Correct Identification will earn your team immunity. Students will need to see two identical containers of salt and sugar. Ensure that they do not touch or taste the sugar or salt. They should use a flame test to identify sugar. Sugar caramelizes when exposed to heat. Out Practice Out Think SCIENCE SURVIVOR

In front of you is an egg. How can you cause the egg to undergo a chemical change without breaking its shell? Teams that correctly identify techniques to chemically change the egg will earn immunity. Exposing an egg to heat, by boiling it causes the egg to undergo a chemical change. You may also put the egg into vinegar to cause a chemical change. Out Practice Out Think SCIENCE SURVIVOR

On the table is a container with 300 mL of water. A line has been drawn on the container at the water line. What will happen to the water in the container if it is left uncovered for a week? Describe the change which took place. Correct responses will earn immunity for the team. A physical change will happen. The water will evaporate, change from a liquid to a gas, over time. On your table are vinegar, water, flour, baking soda, a balloon, bottle, and soap. How can you use some or all of these materials to inflate the balloon without using your mouth? Teams which inflate their balloons in minutes or less will earn immunity. Pour baking soda into the balloon. Pour vinegar into the bottle. Stretch balloon over the top of the bottle, take care not to tip the baking soda into the bottle. Lift the balloon up and pour baking soda into vinegar. They will have a chemical reaction with will create carbon dioxide, and blow up the balloon. Out Practice Out Think SCIENCE SURVIVOR

On the table is an index card and a pair of scissors. Can you change the index card in a way that will allow you to walk through it? You have 2 minutes to complete this task. If successful your team will earn immunity. You must also determine if this task required you to chemically or physically change the index card. It is a physical change. Here’s an example of how the students might cut the paper. You many have to change the way you are viewing this PPT to see the example. Go to View on the menu bar and click on the notes page. Your teacher is holding a lighted birthday candle. Can you identify the chemical and physical changes that are taking place as the candle burns? Correct identification will earn your team immunity. Teacher holds the lighted birthday candle. Wrap bottom with foil to prevent wax from dripping on your fingers. The physical change is the melting of the wax. The chemical change is the burning of the wick. (Teacher note: These candles are not made from wax. They are made from paraffin.) Out Practice Out Think SCIENCE SURVIVOR

On the table in front of you is a mixture of iron filings, sand, and sugar. How can you separate these three objects? Use the materials on your table to develop a plan to separate these materials. Teams that successfully separate or write a detailed description of how to separate the mixture will earn immunity. On the table provide paper towels, pipets, a magnet, water, beaker, tweezers, coffee filter, bowl, or other materials. Use a magnet to separate the iron filings from the sand and sugar. Then pour the sand and sugar mixture into warm water. Pour the sand and sugar mixture through the filter paper. The sand will be in the filter paper. On the table in front of you are an apple, potato, and banana. Using nothing more than a paper plate and plastic knife, how can you cause the apple, potato, and banana to undergo a chemical change and a physical change? Successful teams will be able to correctly create & identify each change and earn immunity. Cut each in half. When exposed to air, the apple, banana, and potato, will oxidize or turn brown. In front of you are several different rocks. One of the rocks is limestone. We know that limestone reacts chemically to vinegar. Use the pipet and vinegar to correctly identify the limestone. Teams that correctly identify the limestone in 1 minute or less will earn immunity. Use several stones from a rock kit. When you pour vinegar on limestone, it bubbles. Allow students to use pipet to pour vinegar over each stone until they discover the one that reacts chemically. Have paper plates and paper towels for students to use when testing. The beaker in front of you contains a 50% salt and 50% water solution. Describe, complete with labeled illustrations, how you would separate the salt and water. Is a physical or chemical change required? Correct teams will earn immunity. A physical change is required. Heat could be applied to the solution to evaporate the water and leave the salt remaining. Identify the following as a Chemical or Physical Change Separating sand and gravel Bleaching (dying) your hair Squeezing oranges for juice Breaking glass Rusting bicycle Hammering wood to make a playhouse Melting butter Spoiling food Mowing the lawn Exploding fireworks If all 10 are correctly identified your team will earn immunity. Which weighs more, a whole cookie or a cookie that has been broken into many pieces. Use a triple beam balance or regular balance to support your answer. What type of change has the cookie undergone? Teams with correct responses will earn immunity. This is sort of a trick question. They both weigh the same. It would be helpful to weigh each before you start to ensure that they weigh the same prior to one of them being broken into pieces. Out Practice Out Think SCIENCE SURVIVOR

Which of materials on the table in front can you combine inside the film canister to pop the top off the film canister? You have 2 minutes to create a successful experiment to pop the top off the film canister. Successful teams will earn immunity. Place a variety of objects on the table. Students need access to a vinegar and baking soda or effervescent tablets (Alka-Seltzer) and water. I would also recommend placing a few distracters on the table such as salt, sugar, flour, sand, etc… Students should place water in the film canister and a portion of an effervescent tablet, and quickly replace the top on the canister.
