1 January 20/23 Topic of the Day: Review
Quick Write: If a block of maple wood has a density value of 3. 5g/cm3 if we cut the block in half what will result in the density value of that piece of wood? If a sample of gas molecules are trapped in a balloon over a flask and are heated up, describe what will occur to the space and movement of those molecules. How can you identify that a chemical change has taken place within a sample of matter? Describe 4 steps to take in finding the volume of an irregular shaped object. Define the following: isotope and quark What is the Octet Rule? Homework: Study and review all note slides, What to study topics from September, midterm review slides, old tests and quizzes SWBAT: Midterm Review

2 If a block of maple wood has a density value of 3
If a block of maple wood has a density value of 3. 5g/cm3 if we cut the block in half what will result in the density value of that piece of wood? The density is the same because it is a ratio between mass and volume so it NEVER changes if cut in half or doubled in size! 2. If a sample of gas molecules are trapped in a balloon over a flask and are heated up, describe what will occur to the space and movement of those molecules. The molecules gain energy so move faster and move away from each other. 3. How can you identify that a chemical change has taken place within a sample of matter? The sample of matter will turn into a new substance and it cannot be turned back into its original form naturally.

3 4. Describe 4 steps to take in finding the volume of an irregular shaped object. 1. measure and record a sample of water in a graduated cylinder. 2. Place your irregular object slowly into the graduated cylinder. 3. Record the new volume. 4. Find the difference between the two recordings and that is the volume  5. Define the following: isotope and quark Isotope: atom that has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. Quark: particle that makes up all other known particle in the nucleus of an atom 6. What is the Octet Rule? All atoms want to have 8 valence electrons in their outer shell, except He!
