1 Mao fights back… Could set this as a homework if running out of time LO: to understand the growing power struggle in the aftermath of the GLF This will help us understand the Cultural Revolution.

2 Why was there such rivalry?
Mao’s rivalry with Liu Shaoqi (and Deng Xioaping) Liu had criticised Mao’s GLF and the famine at the Conference of the Seven Thousand in January 1962, in front of 7,000 cadres. In 1963, at another conference, Mao had to scheme behind the scenes so that the delegates wouldn’t replace him with Liu as Chairman of the CCP. Liu had become President of the People’s Republic of China and most of the population regarded him as of equal importance as Mao! When he was re-appointed President in 1965, there were portraits of Liu hanging in Tiananmen Square on his own, without Mao! Mao’s dislike of economic policy after the GLF; believed Liu and Deng’s pragmatism encouraged capitalist tendencies and an increased urban/rural split (Mao was always talking of using rural peasants as the example of everything) Liu and Deng had recruited Chen Yun, the CCP’s leading economist, and he suggested the only way of solving the food crisis was to allow some degree of private farming and for peasants to keep some profit – as an incentive to grow more. This undermined the peasants’ communes and the collectivisation of agriculture which had been created by Mao. Mao was very suspicious of other leaders like Liu establishing contacts with the USSR and Leonid Brezhnev; Peng had tried this and this was one of the reasons that Mao had him purged (as well as his criticisms of the famine). Read the Wild Swans 2 page extract – summarises how Mao is plotting revenge – how does the auther suggest he plans to do it? Summarise for me once you’ve read it (verbal summary is fine) After famine, Mao sidelined – rivalry grows between him and LS/DX. Mao hated the 3rd 5YP, and has political suspicions Why was there such rivalry?

3 What did Mao do? Socialist Education movement
But Lui still in charge so… Mao, wanting to protect his position, began to build up an alternative power base (as Liu and Deng now controlled the economy and government bureaucracy) His supporters also helped to establish the personality cult of Mao. So what does Mao do? Moves to Shanghai with his wife and builds a powerbase there (SEM – roots of cultural rev) What did Mao do?

4 Towards the Cultural Revolution
Socialist education Personality cult Creating an alternative power base Towards the Cultural Revolution Print a4 Use whitfield to complete. P.90 – 93 (see completed ones in file) Plan – re-educate masses about socialism – scared that moderates in party are forgetting socialism (or is this an excuse and really its all about power?) Starts to see PLA as his own private army, and their leader supports Mao. Mao’s wife – madame Mao – power crazy, works to build cult of personality Lei Feng (part of personality cult – seen as a model soldier who devoted his life to communism) BUT, debate about dead soldier’s diary authenticity
