What type of scholarships are out there? Where can scholarships be found? When should students apply for scholarships? How do we navigate the process? Questions you may be pondering…….

3 What Type of Scholarships Are There?
Merit Based Merit scholarships are awarded to recognize outstanding academic performance, talents and leadership Need Based Need-based scholarships are awarded to those who demonstrate financial need. Academic Academic Scholarships are awarded based on a student’s intended area of study. Most common areas of study: education, health, science, technology Athletic Athletic Scholarships are generally offered by colleges run by the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA. *Resize Chart

4 Other Types of Scholarships
Scholarships by Grade Majority of scholarships are for college bound high school seniors but there are scholarships offered for other grades including middle school! Scholarships by Type Ethnic Background Medical Disability(Deaf, ADHD etc...) Community Service Religious Artistic Abilities (Music, Art..etc)

Guidance Office There are announcements when a new scholarship becomes available. NOW! It is never too early to begin preparing application materials for scholarships! Majority of scholarship deadlines are between the months of February-April

7 How to Navigate the Scholarship Process
Step 1: Pre-Organization Begin to pull together all of the materials you think will be needed for your scholarships Academic Information and Transcripts Recommendation Letters College Choices Personal Essay Community/Volunteer Work Step 2: Create a list of Eligible Scholarships Step 3: STAY ORGANIZED! Sort the Scholarships by Deadline Step 4: Start Applying

9 Here are Some Tips: Identify and understand the sponsor’s goals. If you can identify these goals, you will be able to direct your application towards satisfying these goals, increasing your chances! Give concrete examples Complete the application in full and have someone proofread. Simply following all of the directions increases your chances! Meet all deadlines Start locally and Consider smaller awards Remember, more work=less applicants! Students that apply to scholarships that require little work may be going up against many other students compared to scholarships that requires more work Focus on your interest. Applying to every scholarship can lead to burnout Begin as soon as possible!
