2 Figure 1 Long-term relationship among systolic pressure, left ventricular mass, and death rate in the dialysis population. Persistent hypertension (along with other factors) generates and progressively aggravates left ventricular hypertrophy up to a point where heart failure supervenes. Heart failure lowers blood pressure (BP) and eventually causes death, thus generating an inverse association between BP and mortality.
