1 Electric Charges ELECTRICITY

2 Learning Goals To be able to explain electric charge

3 Atom – the smallest part of a substance that retains the properties of that substance
Atoms are made of 3 subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons

4 Particle Electric Charge Location Property Proton Neutron Electron
Positive Nucleus Cannot move from atom to atom Neutron No charge (neutral) Electron Negative Around nucleus Can move from atom to atom

5 Electric force – force of attraction or repulsion between charged objects

6 Charged and Neutral Objects
Only electrons can move In order for an object to become charged, it has to either gain or lose electrons

7 Neutral Negative Positive Same number of protons and electrons When an atom gains electrons When an atom loses electrons

8 Law of Electric Charges
Objects with the same (like) charges repel Objects with opposite (unlike) charges attract Charged objects will sometimes attract neutral objects

9

10 Strength of Force Depends on the distance between the objects and the amount of charge on the objects The closer the objects are, the stronger the force The larger the charge, the stronger the force

11

12 Success Criteria I CAN explain how items become electrically charged by the movement of electrons

13 To Do… Worksheet Bill Nye
