1 Questions to consider about the quotes…
What is your first impression of the speaker(s) after reading each quote? What can you infer about the meaning of the quote? What prediction(s) can you make about “Of Mice and Men” based on each quote? WRITE YOUR ANSWERS DOWN ON A SHEET OF PAPER!!!

2 Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place….With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. I seen hundreds of men come by on the road…with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads…every damn one of ‘em’s got a little piece of land in his head. “The boss gave the stable buck hell?” “Sure. Ya see the stable buck’s a n-----r.” “N-----r, huh?” “Yeah. Nice fella too. Got a crooked back where a horse kicked him. Boss gives him hell when he’s mad. But the buck don’t give a damn about that. He reads a lot. Got books in his room.”

3 “A guy needs somebody—to be near him
“A guy needs somebody—to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he’s with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick.” “Just like heaven. Ever’body wants a little piece of land. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head. They’re all the time talkin’ about it, but it’s jus’ in their head.”

4 Of Mice & Men Photos Look at each photo
Take a minute and look at something else, then look at the photo again. Scrutinize details, facial expressions, clothing, background, body language and answer the following questions…. REMEMBER: These were the kinds of lives the characters in John Steinbeck’s novel were living.

5 What details stand out to you?
How do you think the subject(s) of the photo felt at the time it was taken? Why? List three (3) emotions you might experience if you were the subject of the photograph. What does the lack of color in these photographs suggest about the setting or times depicted?
