6 The Seven Seals The Book of Revelation Lesson 5, February 2
Ang Pitong Tatak

7 The Seven Seals Key Text Revelation 5:9, 10 nkjv “ ‘YOU ARE WORTHY to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.’ ” Susing Talata.

8 people in the process of overcoming.
The Seven Seals Initial Words REVELATION 3:21 GIVES the key to the meaning of the seven seals: “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.” Chapters 4 and 5 tells of Christ’s overcoming and His worthiness to open the scroll. The last verses of chapter 7 describe the overcomers before Christ’s throne. Thus, chapter 6 is about God’s people in the process of overcoming. Panimulang Salita.

10 conquering and to conquer.’ ”
The Seven Seals 1. The First Seal: the Conqueror Revelation 6:1, 2 nkjv “ ‘NOW I SAW when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.’ ” 1.

11 The First and Second Seal
The Seven Seal’s Background THE CONTEXT OF the seven seals: Old Testament covenant curses—sword, famine, pestilence, and wild beasts (Lev. 26:21–26); God’s “four severe judgments” (Ezek. 14:21). The four horsemen are God’s way to keep His people on the right track by reminding them that this world, as it now exists, is not their home.

12 The First and Second Seal
The First Seal: The Conqueror Revelation 6:1, 2 is about conquest. It recalls Revelation 19:11–16: Christ as riding a white horse and leading His angels to deliver His people at the Second Coming. The rider on the horse holds a bow and is given a crown. The Greek word for the crown is stephanos, which is the crown of victory (Rev. 2:10, Rev. 3:11). Petsa at Lugar.

13 The First and Second Seal
The First Seal: The Conqueror The first seal describes the spread of the gospel, which started at Pentecost. Through the dispersion of the gospel, Christ began expanding His kingdom. The first seal corresponds to the message to the church in Ephesus; it describes the apostolic period of the first century during which the gospel spread rapidly throughout the world.

14 there was given to him a great sword.”
The Seven Seals 1. The Second Seal: Conflict on Earth Revelation 6:3, 4 nkjv “When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, ‘Come and see.’ Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.” 1.

15 The First and Second Seal
The Second Seal: Conflict on Earth The second seal describes the consequences of rejecting the gospel, beginning in the second century. As Christ is waging spiritual warfare through the preaching of the gospel, the forces of evil render resistance. The rider does not do the killing. Instead, he takes peace from the earth. As a result, persecution follows.

16 do not harm the oil and the wine.’ ”
The Seven Seals 2. The Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth Revelation 6:5, 6 nkjv “WHEN HE OPENED the third seal... behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.’ ” 2. ” (Apocalipsis 6:5, 6).

17 2. Third and Fourth Seal The Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth TO EAT BREAD To by weighing the grain denoted great scarcity or famine (Ezek. 4:16). In John’s day, a denarius was a daily wage (Matt. 20:2). A daily wage would buy all the necessities for the family for that day. In the third seal, it would take a whole day’s work to buy just enough food for only one person.

18 2. Third and Fourth Seal The Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth The third seal points to the further consequences of rejecting the gospel, beginning in the fourth century, as the church gained political power. The black horse denotes the absence of the gospel and the reliance on human traditions. The rejection of the gospel results in a famine of God’s Word like what Amos prophesied (Amos 8:11–13).

19 The Seven Seals 2. The Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth Revelation 6:7, 8 nkjv “When he opened the fourth seal I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.” 2.

20 2. Third and Fourth Seal The Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth The rider’s name is Death; Hades, the place of the dead, accompanies him. These two are allowed to destroy people by sword, hunger, death, and wild beasts. The good news: they are given authority only over one fourth of the earth. Jesus assures us that He has the keys of Hades and Death (see Rev. 1:18, NKJV).

21 2. Third and Fourth Seal The Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth The third seal points to the period of compromise of the fourth and fifth centuries, which was characterized by a spiritual famine caused by a lack of the Bible and its truths, leading to the “Dark Ages.” The fourth seal aptly describes the spiritual death that characterized Christianity for nearly a thousand years.

22 The Seven Seals 3. The Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs Revelation 6:9-11 nkjv “WHEN HE OPENED the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain.... And they cried... “How long...until You...avenge our blood....?” Then a white robe was given to each...that they should rest a little while longer, until...the number of... who would be killed...was completed.” 3. (Apocalipsis 6:9-11).

23 THE WORD “SOUL” in the Bible denotes the whole person (Gen. 2:7).
3. The Fifth and Sixth Seal The Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs THE WORD “SOUL” in the Bible denotes the whole person (Gen. 2:7). These texts concern the injustice done here on earth; they are not saying anything about the state of the dead. After all, these people do not appear to be enjoying the bliss of heaven. They have to rest until their brothers, also martyred, are made complete.

24 3. The Fifth and Sixth Seal
The Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs The Greek text does not have the word number. Revelation does not talk of a number of the martyred saints to be reached before Christ’s return, but of completeness regarding their character. They are made complete by the robe of Christ’s righteousness. They are not resurrected and vindicated until Christ’s second coming (Rev. 20:4).

25 3. The Fifth and Sixth Seal
The Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs The scene of the fifth seal applies historically to the period leading up to, and following, the Reformation, during which millions were martyred because of their faithfulness. It also recalls the experience of God’s suffering people throughout history, from Abel (Gen. 4:10) until God will finally avenge “ ‘the blood of His servants’ ” (Rev. 19:2).

26 every mountain and island was moved out of its place.”
The Seven Seals 3. The Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances Revelation 6:12-14 nkjv “When he opened seal...there was a great earthquake;...the sun became black..., the moon became like blood. ...The stars of heaven fell to the earth.... Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.” 3.

27 The sun, moon, “stars” (meteors), and sky are literal here.
3. The Fifth and Sixth Seal The Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances The sun, moon, “stars” (meteors), and sky are literal here. The use of the words “as” or “like” is a picture of an actual thing or event—the sun became black as sackcloth, the moon became like blood, and the stars fell to the earth as a fig tree drops its late figs. Ang araw, ang buwan, ang “mga bituin” (mga bulalakaw), at ang langit ay literal dito.

28 3. The Fifth and Sixth Seal
The Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances Fulfillment: the Lisbon earthquake, in 1755; the dark day of May 19, 1780 (eastern New York and southern New England); and the meteor shower over the Atlantic Ocean, on November 13, 1833. The fulfillment of this prophecy, in Revelation 6:12–14 led to a series of revivals and to the realization that Christ’s second coming was near.

29 The Seven Seals Final Words “IN SCRIPTURE THERE is assurance that God has always cared for His people: that in history itself He is ever present to sus-tain them, and that in the great eschatolo-gical denouement He will give them full vindication and an incomprehensibly generous reward in life everlasting. The book of Revelation picks up and expands beautifully this same theme....”—K. A. Strand Huling Pananalita.
A. Strand
