Finnish National Board of Education: A Quality Project for Language Learning and Teaching

2 The Context:. a national project, 2009-2010
The Context: *a national project, *participants: 48 municipalities,5 private schools, Finnish universities with teacher training and three national networks for lesser taught languages  

3 The Emphasis on: *developing the language provision in the schools/towns and cities, provinces *better possibility to learn languages *immigrant languages *in-service training *CLIL *distance learning, web courses *networking in Finland and all over Europe

4 Finnish National Board of Education provides resources:
Finnish National Board of Education provides resources: *grants to schools and municipalities *training in project skills *a structured in-service training programme *a common virtual platform *seminars and workshops *a national “advertisement” campaign for multilingualism

5 What do we needed to do first and why
What do we needed to do first and why? *a survey on the situation in all the municipalities and schools in the national project **teachers to answer **an on-line survey ****multiple choices ****open questions   The summary is done with the help of ZEF-software ( *the actual analyzing of the data: **by the co-ordinators locally **a national summary is written by Ms eija ruohomäki

6 The main purpose of the survey:. to get information for development
The main purpose of the survey: *to get information for development **language provision **in-service training **what is quality? **virtual learning **what kind of help do teachers need? **sharing ideas **Finnish National Board of Education will be informed about local needs to support the quality development process on the national level

7 Action taken: -Graz: a starting point, brainstorming, the first draft of the survey -In Finland: *working on it on – line (WINDOWS-LIVE WORkSPACE) *presenting the idea to Finnish National Board of Education *presenting the survey to all co-ordinators in the pilot schools and municipalities *feedback->working on it on-line

  When the survey is ready: * a link send to all the coordinators in finland by ->the local co-ordinators send it to all schools/language teachers   After the stopdate: *results published nationally: a summary and a set of ideas *co-ordinators use it as a development tool locally  *The monitoring of the ACTUAL development process IS DONE BY Finnish National Board of Education

There is enough to do during recess. 5. Leaving the school grounds without permission is common. 6. Action is taken when someone smokes on school grounds. 7. It is safe to move about in the school corridors. 8. Adults always take action if there is bullying at school.

The main outcomes of the survey: *more information from the grass root level to define the project plan and decide on actions *the teachers –the real experts- feel they have been involved in the project from the very beginning The main outcomes of the project: *a successful project with a lot of co-operation and good communication  ->equal opportunities for pupils to choose and learn languages ->more motivated teachers with better skills = QUALITY
