1 So you’ve got yourself a new nation……..now what!?!?
What do we call it? What style of government will it be? Who’s in charge? Structure? How will we accrue $? Who will protect us?

2 The Articles of Confederation
Allowed for: -A Confederation Congress *Could declare war and raise armies *Negotiate & make treaties with other nations

3 Problems with the Articles of Confederation
Founders: “We may have screwed this up!”

4 A. No Chief Executive Why was this included? Americans were
So no one takes charge? That could be a problem! Why was this included? Americans were fearful of another king ruling over them.

5 The Articles of Confederation were?
1.THE TREATY THAT ENDED THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 2.THE FIRST CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES 3.THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE U.S. AND FRANCE TO PAY OFF WAR DEBTS 4.THE FIRST AMERICAN BILL OF RIGHTS

6 B. Laws need to be approved by 9 of 13 states
Possible Problem: It would take 9 states pass any new law. Wow that’s a lot of people to try to convince!

7 Without any money I can’t provide any services!
C. Congress did not have the power to tax citizens. It could only request money from states. Why was this included? England had passed too many unfair taxes! Without any money I can’t provide any services!

8 THE POWER TO DETERMINE PEACE AND WAR
WHICH POWER WAS NOT GRANTED TO THE GOVERNMENT BY THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION? THE POWER TO DETERMINE PEACE AND WAR THE POWER TO DECIDE DISPUTES BETWEEN STATES THE POWER TO ESTABLISH AND REGULATE INTERSTATE POST OFFICES THE POWER TO COLLECT TAXES

9 Wow! Hope nothing bad happens!
D. Congress did not have the power to draft an army. It could only request states to send men for military service. Possible Problem: If the country needed to be defended, no one had to help! Wow! Hope nothing bad happens!

10 E. No national court system.
Possible Problem: The Laws were not the same everywhere. How could anyone figure out what rules to follow?! What a mess! No one will know what’s going on!

11 The Articles of Confederation did not establish
Laws A Congress Courts Abilities to make treaties

12 So that means just one of us can ruin everything!? Oops!
F. Any amendments (changes) to the Articles must be approved by all 13 states. Why was this included? Wanted everyone to have a say in how things were run. So that means just one of us can ruin everything!? Oops!

13 G. No Congress did not have the power to collect state debts owed to the federal government
Possible Problem: If they help the states, they may not get the money back So I can’t raise a tax to get it back or make a new law so I can get back my money either?!

14 Who held power under the Articles of Confederation?
THE PRESIDENT CONGRESS THE SUPREME COURT THE STATES

15 H. Congress did not have power to settle disputes
Why was this included? Didn’t want the government to be able to interfere with public. Well I can’t raise an army! You guys don’t have the same laws and I can’t make a new one to help. Plus you decided to have no leader to help you…

16 Articles of Confederation

17 The Articles of Confederation were ratified?
BEFORE THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE AFTER THE DECLARATION BUT BEFORE THE START OF THE REVOLUTION DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AFTER THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION WAS OVER

18 Why were the Articles replaced by the U.S. Constitution?
SO THE STATES COULD END THE WAR WITH BRITAIN SO THE STATES COULD RAISE TAXES SO THE U.S. COULD FORM A STRONGER GOVERNMENT SO THE U.S. COULD FORM A CONGRESS
