1 Describe 2 reasons a cell would need to go through mitosis
Homework: Homework Packet 7- Practice #1

2 Reasons for Mitosis 1. Growth- Growing in size (childhood development, puberty, etc.) 2. Repair- healing cuts, scrapes, wounds, broken bones etc. 3. Maintenance- replacing damaged or sick cells What happens if a cell goes through mitosis for no reason?

3 Cancerous cells vs. normal cells
Observations? Questions?

4 Cancerous Cells By definition, cancerous cells are cells that divide uncontrollably Meaning, they constantly go through mitosis with no regulation or reason to

5 Group Brainstorm After viewing the video, brainstorm some ideas for how we could prevent cancerous cells from dividing uncontrollably and stop the cancerous cell from spreading

6 Cell Cycle Checkpoints
During the life of the cell, there are checkpoints that: Make sure only healthy cells divide Make sure cell division only happens when it is needed Remember that interphase is our longest phase 1. G1 phase 2. S phase 3. G2 phase

7 Create a paper plate model using the diagrams provided
Required items: 4 Phases of Cell Cycle Labeled Description of what occurs in each phase Description of 3 checkpoints in their correct phase Label which phases are mitosis and which are interphase

8 Checkpoints G1 Checkpoint: Is the cell the correct size? Does it have enough nutrients? G2 Checkpoint: Did the DNA replicate properly, without any errors? Metaphase Checkpoint: Are all the chromosomes aligned properly in the middle of the cell?

9 Elephants and Cancer Elephants are immune to cancer--- why???
Read and annotate the article individually Wait quietly for instructions for a group project after you have finished

10 Elephants and Cancer Tasks
Each group will be responsible for 1 task. You will create a poster and presentation for your task that then will present to your classmates. Use the article and other resources to answer the question. Then, create your poster and presentation. Make sure everyone in your group contributes. You should have enough information on your poster to create a 5-10 minute presentation. You must use and cite 3 additional academic sources. Each individual should write in their own color of marker, and sign their name on the poster in that color

11 Cell Cycle Exit Ticket 1. Explain the three components of interphase.
2. Describe the three cell cycle checkpoints that occur before a cell divides 3. Summarize the role that p53 plays in elephants

12 Explain what occurs during S phase of the cell cycle
QUEST TOMORROW Homework Packet 9 Practice #1 due tomorrow

13 Presentation Tips Begin with an introduction to your topic, include any background information or basic definitions Break your topic into sub-topics to make it easier to follow Include pictures or diagrams that you can explain Be sure to understand the information well enough that you sound informed when you present Decide who is going to explain what, split the work equally
