2 Colonization From the Greek word “colonos” meaning people who live away from here Various ideas and approaches to colonization of the New World Spain viewed the New World as a source of wealth, and raw resources. Forced conversions to Christianity France held a similar view, but was more religiously tolerant Canada & Louisiana England saw the New World as a dumping ground for social misfits. Sought an expansion of imperial holdings. Colonists sought land, religious freedom, wealth, adventure

Made 3 more journeys, but never believed that he was not near India. 1513 Ponce de Leon discovered Florida “Pasqua de la Flores”

5 Spain After the Armada’s Defeat
After the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 the Spanish began a slow, but steady decline. Both England and France engaged in acts of piracy against Spanish shipping. This also allowed the English and French to pursue their own colonial agendas in the New World. Neither power’s first attempts at colonization were successful.
