1 10.3 Regulating the Cell Cycle
p286

2 Q: How is the cell cycle regulated?
A: The cell cycle is controlled by regulatory proteins both inside & outside the cell.

3 Regulatory Proteins Internal regulators External regulators
Cyclin-regulates the timing of the cell cycle. Normally, when cells touch, they stop growing. Growth factors-one of a group of external regulatory proteins that stimulate the growth and division of cells.

4 Apoptosis-Process of programmed cell death.

5 Cancer: Uncontrolled Cell Growth p53 gene
Q: How do cancer cells differ from other cells? A: Cancer cells do not respond to the signals that regulate the growth of most cells. As a result, the cells divide uncontrollably.

6 Cancer: Uncontrolled Cell Growth
Cancer-does not respond to the signals that regulate the growth of most cells. Tumor-mass of cancer cells. Caused by defects in the genes that regulate cell growth & division (p53 gene).
