1 01 WINTER BYOD Template Bring Your Own Device

2 PURPOSE 02 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is meant to supplement the technology that the school currently has so that classrooms can do more one-to-one activities. BYOD will also evaluate the impact of using personal technology devices on classroom instruction and learning. TCES is helping to pilot this program before implementing it across the district. Most technology on campus is shared, therefore limiting the amount of time that it can be used. -2 computer labs -3 laptops/chromebooks per class -1 set of SMART Clickers per grade

3 PARTICIPATION 03 Participation in BYOD is optional. Your student is not required to bring a device to school. Any student who does not bring their own device will use a school-provided device. BYOD is not meant to exclude students who do not participate. Any student who participates will be expected to follow BYOD expectations and procedures. A student can lose the privilege to bring their own device. Students and parents will sign a form before being allowed to participate.

4 PERSONAL USE 04 Devices will not be shared among students.
Students will use only the device they brought and can not share their device with another student. If a student does not bring a device, they will use a school-provided device. **Sharing is permitted between siblings. Expectations will be discussed with those parents.

5 SECURITY 05 Devices will be secured in a designated spot (locked drawer or cabinet) when not in use. The homeroom teacher and the front office each hold a key for the cabinets. Keys are different from class to class. Other teachers do not have access to opening the cabinets. Cabinets will be unlocked in the morning for students to place their devices in. Devices will be taken out during individual use. Students will retrieve their devices at the end of the day.

6 WINTER SECURITY 06 Template
Internet access is secure and CIPA compliant. Students will be expected to use the Tomball ISD WiFi. TISD uses Fortigate by Fortinet. This includes strict Web Filtering and a Firewall. The same filtering that applies to school-provided technology will apply to your student’s device. Students will NOT access the internet using their 3G/4G or personal internet. Consent form will include agreement to use school WiFi. Template

7 RESPONSIBILITY 07 The district, school, or teachers are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. Participation in BYOD is strictly voluntary. Students and parents will sign a consent form before a student can bring their device. This will include an agreement that you understand the district, school, or teachers cannot be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. The student will be expected to keep their device in their backpack or locked cabinet while not in use to prevent theft.

8 DAILY USE 08 Device usage will be based on the lessons and activities planned for that day. If devices are not needed, students may leave them in their backpacks or place them in the designated spot to be locked and secured until the end of the day.

9 DAILY USE 09 Devices are NOT meant for playing during school hours. Devices would be used only for designated activities and would otherwise be in the student’s backpack or designated locked spot. Devices will not be played with during arrival, dismissal, or class time. Students/parents will agree that non-school related activities are not allowed before bringing their device. Ex: texting, social media. If students are playing during school hours, they can lose the privilege to bring their device again.

10 CONSENT FORM 10 Students and parents must sign a BYOD consent form before a student can bring their own device. The consent form states that you understand/agree: -participation is optional -classroom expectations must be followed -Pictures/videos can not be taken/posted -District/school/teachers are not held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items -District WiFi must be used -Only academic use is permitted (no playing) -Privilege to participate can be lost

11 WINTER DEVICES 11 Template
Many handheld, internet capable devices are appropriate for BYOD. A data plan is NOT necessary, as students will be using the school WiFi only. iPod touch iPhone/IPad Android phones Chromebooks Many parents have inquired about donating old iPod touches and unused iPhones or Android phones… YES, we will definitely accept these!
