1 Phases of Meiosis Chapter 10.2

2 Interphase Same as interphase of mitosis
Cell replicates its chromosomes Grows in size

3 Prophase I Chromosomes visible Nucleus disappears
Homologous chromosomes pair together to form a tetrad Crossing over occurs Exchange of genetic material on homologous chromosomes Results in new combinations of alleles on chromosomes

4 Metaphase I Chromosomes attached to spindle fibers at the centromeres
Homologous chromosomes line up across from each other at the middle of the cell

5 Anaphase I Homologous chromosomes separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell

6 Telophase I Two daughter cells are formed Chromosome uncoil
Nucleus reforms

7 Prophase II Same as prophase of mitosis Nucleus disappears
Chromosomes become visible Chromosomes still made up of two sister chromatids

8 Metaphase II Chromosomes line up at the middle of the cell

9 Anaphase II Sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell by the spindle fibers

10 Telophase II Nuclei reform
Cell divides to produce four gamete cells that contain a haploid number of chromosomes
