1 Nervous System

2 Functions of the nervous system
Sensory Input Monitor changes (stimuli) occurring inside and ouside of the body Ex. seeing a red light while driving

3 Functions of the nervous system
Integration Process and interpret sensory input and make decisions Ex. interpret red light as STOP!

4 Functions of the Muscle System
Motor Output Effects a response by activating muscles or glands Ex. foot goes for break petal

5 Organization of nervous system
Structural Classification Central Nervous System- brain and spinal cord Peripheral Nervous System- cranial and spinal nerves (everything outside of CNS)

6 Organization of nervous system
CNS-interpret incoming sensory information and issue instructions

7 Organization of Nervous System
PNS-communication lines link all parts of body -Spinal nerves- carry impulses to and from spinal cord Cranial nerves- carry impulses to and from brain

8 Organization of the nervous system
Functional classification Sensory (afferent) Motor (efferent)

9 Organization of the Nervous System
Sensory(afferent) division Nerve fibers that convey impulses to the CNS from sensory receptors all over the body

10 Organization of the nervous system
Motor (efferent) division- carries impulses from CNS to effector organs (muscles and glands) Bring about a motor response

11 Sudivisions of motor division
Somatic(voluntary) nervous system- voluntarily control our skeletal muscles EXCEPTION- stretch reflex

12 Subdivisions of motor division
Autonomic (involuntary) nervous system- regulates events that are automatic of involuntary Activity of smooth and cardiac muscles, and glands Consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic
