1 States of Matter Chapter 2 Section 1
States of Matter Rap Video - Non newtonian fluid -

2 a. A _solid_ is the first state of matter.
i. Solids have a definite _shape_ and _volume_. The particles that make up a solid are tightly _packed_ and _stay_ in one position. iii. The particles are not sitting still but _vibrating_ in place.

3 B. Types of Solids i. _Crystalline_ _structures_ are formed when particles for a repeated pattern. ii. When a crystalline structure is heated it _melts_ at a specific temperature. iii. _Amorphous_ _solids_ are solids where its particles are not arranged in a regular pattern. iv. Amorphous solids do not have a distinct _melting_ _point_. They instead soften or _change_ to another substance. Brain Pop - Snowflakes Giant Crystal Cave -

4 a. A _liquid_ is the second state of matter.
i. Liquids have a definite _volume_ but no _shape_ of their own. ii. Particles in a liquid are _tightly_ packed but are able to _move_ _freely_. iii. The freely moving particles allows the liquid to _flow_. iv. _Fluid_ means a substance that flows.

5 b. Properties of a liquid
i. _Surface_ _tension_ is the result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that bring the molecules on the surface closer. ii. A liquids resistance to flowing is called _viscosity_. iii. High viscosity causes liquid to flow _slowly_. iv. Low viscosity causes liquid to flow _quickly_. Brain Pop - water Longest Drop -

6 a. _Gas_ is the third state of matter.
iii. Gases a. _Gas_ is the third state of matter. i. Gas has no _volume_ and can change its _shape_. ii. Gas particles move and _spread_ _apart_ filling up the entire space. Steve Spangler -
