Finance / Funding/ Raising an army Leadership Royalists - led by the King and later by his nephew Prince Rupert – successes – charismatic – eccentric – unable to catch him – however makes rash decisions – Naseby starts the battle without knowing the size of the parliamentarian side – Parliamentarian Army – problems in leadership especially clear at Newbury – Cromwell advocated change – creation of a New Model Army – promotion by merit Reason for Parliamentarian victory King’s support came from the rich land lords in the north –area sparsely populated – unable to keep raising taxes from this group as the war progressed – sells crown jewels in 1645 to buy weapons Parliament –support in South and East – richer merchant areas – is able to raise taxes – can afford reforms in the army The army Both sides equally matched – result in no decisive battle – urgent reform in 1644 – New Model Army – professional army – training – salary – ability – new weapons given to all – uniform – strict code of discipline – King’s army made no reforms –only appointed Prince Rupert as the leader of the army
