1 Lesson 1.2/1.4 Order of Operations
Essential Question: How do you use the order of operations to evaluate an expression including expressions with powers?

2 Before we start… To get ready for school you bought 2 boxes of pencils that each cost $0.99, 4 notebooks that each cost $0.55, and 3 binders that cost $0.92. How will you find your total cost?

3 What is a numerical expression?
Consists of numbers and operations

4 What are the order of operations?
A set of rules established by mathematicians to evaluate an expression involving more than one operation.

5 Order of Operations Parentheses/Grouping Symbols Exponents
Multiplication/Division Addition/Subtraction

6 Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Order of Operations
Parentheses/ Grouping Symbols Exponents Multiplication/ Division Addition/ Subtraction Order of Operations Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

7 How do you use the order of operations to evaluate an expression including expressions with powers?
The order of operations tells us which operation to complete first when there is more than one operation in an expression. PEMDAS Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols. Evaluate powers. Multiply and divide from left to right. Add and subtract from left to right.

8 What does evaluate mean?
To find the value of a numerical expression. The final answer is a number!

9 Grouping Symbols Grouping symbols such as parentheses ( ) and brackets [ ] indicate that operations inside the grouping symbols should be performed first. A fraction bar groups the numerator separate from the denominator.

10 What is a power? An expression that represents repeated multiplication of the same factor.

11 What are the parts of a power?
A power can be written in a form using two numbers, a base and an exponent.

12 The exponent represents the number of times the base is used as a factor.
3 4 =3∙3∙3∙3

13 Evaluate 7+16÷4×2

14 Evaluate 14−6÷2+12

15 Evaluate 35÷ 9−4

22 Evaluate 5−2 3 −7+ 4 3

23 Evaluate ÷ 7−6 4

24 What is a verbal model? Describes a problem using words as labels and using math symbols to relate the words

25 Social Studies On a Social Studies quiz, Amanda scored 5 points for each of the 12 multiple choice questions she answered correctly and 3 points for each of the 8 true-false questions she answered correctly. How many total points did she score?

26 Produce Penny bought two bananas at 30 cents each and three carrots at 10 cents each. Write and evaluate an expression for the total cost.

27 Aquarium Visit You and four friends visit an aquarium, but only three of you go to the movie at the aquarium. What is the total cost of the visit? Aquarium Prices Admission $13.50 Sea Lion Show Free Movie $8.00

28 How do you use the order of operations to evaluate an expression including expressions with powers?
