1 2005 NC State High School Mathematics Contest April 28, 2005 NC School of Science & Mathematics Durham, NC

2 The State Math Contest is sponsored by the NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics

3 Participants Participants must be in the top 7% at one of the qualifying sites across NC. 123 students qualified in 2005 There were 55 seniors, 46 juniors, 17 sophomores, 4 freshmen and 1 eight- grader. There were 99 males and 24 females.

4 Participants mingle while waiting for the contest to begin

5 2005 Participants Students came from 46 different high schools, including 4 home school groups. For seventy students this was there first State Math Contest. One student had been to the State Contest five times prior to this one.

6 The contest is held at the NC School of Science & Math in late April.

7 Test Details The test consists of two parts: –Multiple Choice: 20 questions, 4 points if correct, 1 if left blank, 0 if incorrect. –Integer Answer: 15 questions, 5 points if correct, 0 if incorrect or blank. 90 minute time limit. Any SAT-approved calculators is allowed.

10 After the Test After the test students are treated to pizza for lunch. After lunch students are placed in teams with students from other schools for the Sprints. Five problems are done in relay fashion. Cash prizes are given to the top 3 teams.

11 The Sprint Begins!

12 Every student gets a State Math Contest T- Shirt (notice all the yellow?)

13 Team 19 works hard on a Sprint problem.

14 Sprint judges record answers and elapsed time.
