The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures < ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. 2 March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Abstract This proposal addresses the Online Enrollment Cluster requirements for IEEE u (see reference document IEEE /0275r0). The proposal has been produced by the WiNOT consortium. Req. Description Addressed E1 Online enrollment support by local network Yes E2 New online enrollment mechanism No E4 Advertisement of charges E5 Online enrollment support by SSPN G1 Minimize battery consumption G2 Security impact of solution G3 Support of legacy devices Stefan Berg, BenQ

3 Basic information concept (1/2)
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Basic information concept (1/2) Requirement E1: Online enrollment support by local network Information whether authentication (and credentials) of the user is needed Information whether online enrollment is possible List of all the supported online enrollment methods Information whether the access is public (free for everybody) or private Authentication Required Bit (Y/N) Online Enrollment Supported Bit (Y/N) Methods {UAM, EAP based, …} Open Access Bit (Y/N) Stefan Berg, BenQ

4 Basic information concept (2/2)
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Basic information concept (2/2) Requirement E4: Advertisement of charges Information whether the use of the network is free of charge or not Access Charged Bit (Y/N) Stefan Berg, BenQ

5 Information Discovery
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Information Discovery Passive discovery: A bit in the broadcast beacon capabilities indicates the support of u specification The STA can assume, that the network will provide information on online enrollment Active discovery: A new action frame format enables a query/response mechanism to obtain online enrollment information from the network The STA can query the network for information on online enrollment Note: As online enrollment is considered as additional information for network selection the query/response mechanism to obtain the information should be aligned/identical Stefan Berg, BenQ

6 Discovery – Message flow
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Discovery – Message flow STA AP Broadcast Beacon: “TGu supported” Passive Discovery (Enrollment) Information Request Action Frame (Enrollment) Information Response Action Frame Active Discovery Stefan Berg, BenQ

7 Information format (1/2)
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Information format (1/2) A new online enrollment information element (IE) is defined 4 bits are defined to indicate online enrollment information Element ID (1 octet) Length Flags Information (length) TBD 1-255 Capabilities Enrollment methods (Bitmap) Bit 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Auth Required Enrollment Support Open access Access charged Reserved Stefan Berg, BenQ

8 Information format (2/2)
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Information format (2/2) A bitmap contains a list of all supported online enrollment methods Note: The information provided for online enrollment is closely related to the information treated in the network selection cluster. Therefore the final information format could be defined as a common information element format leaving place for further optimization. Bit 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 UAM EAP Reserved Stefan Berg, BenQ

9 Analysis of general requirements
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Analysis of general requirements G1: Minimize battery consumption Additional exchange of management frames to probe for new enrollment related information elements may increase power consumption G2: Security impact of solution Enrollment functionality, that has been advertised, has to be checked in the enrollment procedure Cost information has to be verified after authentication over a secured channel G3: Support of legacy devices Legacy devices will ignore any new IEs or action frames Stefan Berg, BenQ

10 Summary of the proposal
March 2006 doc.: IEEE /0000r0 March 2006 Summary of the proposal The proposal addresses E1 (required) and E4 (optional) of the requirements of the online enrollment cluster The solutions comprises An information concept to support online enrollment Mechanisms for active and passive discovery A possible information format Analysis of general requirements G1, G2 and G3 (all required) Stefan Berg, BenQ

13 User scenario – Looking for a UAM supporting hotspot
March 2006 User scenario – Looking for a UAM supporting hotspot Internet The user enters an area where there are three hotspots present Without online enrollment information: in worst case the user has to associate with every AP, start the web browser and wait for redirection to the web-login With online enrollment information: the user can directly select an AP that supports UAM, so only one association is necessary The advantages are time saving, reduced air traffic and better user experience Hotspot #1 Non-UAM Hotspot #2 Non-UAM Hotspot #3 UAM
