Theme 1 Key Terms

LEARNING GOALS To provide an overview of the key concepts you should understand throughout theme 1 Human Personhood Anthropology Freedom Creation Culture

Human mixture of earth and divine breath; an incarnation (embodiment) of the divine. We are not robots, we are not mere gene machines, we are not even just animals. We are human. The Christian view of humanity offers the best understanding of what that means This video discusses what components make us “HUMAN”

Personhood basic right and dignity given in creation; still not recognized for all humans in all societies (unborn babies, slaves, “the enemy”); implies that we are relational (literally means “turned toward the other”)

Anthropology the science that studies the origin, development and customs of human beings. Physical anthropology deals with evolution of the human body; cultural anthropology deals with social development, practices and beliefs of human beings. Here is a quick overview of what ANTHROPOLOGY is 

Freedom the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that. It is the power to act deliberately on one's own responsibility. The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to "the slavery of sin."28 Freedom makes man responsible for his acts to the extent that they are voluntary.

Creation Human beings are the outcome of the desire of God. God formed us. God gave us life, our desire for one another, our relation to animals, our moral life, and our ability to speak.

Culture a product of human activity. Human beings are the only species that does not fit automatically in nature; they have to create a culture that provides what is best for the birth, growth and fulfillment of the human creature. Here is an overview of what CULTURE is
