1 Pre AP – 08/20/2018 Pick up a laptop
DO NOW: Pick up a laptop Log in to your Google account (if you still haven’t made one for my class, do this NOW) Open a new Google Doc Title it “position statement” Share it with me at:

2 For this argument, “free” means “freedom of privacy.”
Read the following quote: “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.”― H.L. Mencken For this argument, “free” means “freedom of privacy.” Decide whether or not you agree with the quote. Use the additional quotes below to help you decide on your position. “I hope we once again have reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts.” ― Ronald Reagan “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” ― Benjamin Franklin “Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.” ― Edward Snowden "The Patriot Act closed dangerous gaps in America's law enforcement and intelligence capabilities, gaps that terrorists exploited when they attacked us.“ -- President George W. Bush "By tearing down the wall between law enforcement and the intelligence community, we have been able to share information in a way that was virtually impossible before the Patriot Act." -- Attorney General John Ashcroft This 21st century war is different and requires new ways and methods of gathering information. As technology has increased, so has our ability to gather valuable, often actionable, intelligence. However, the move toward "home-grown" terror will necessarily require, by accident or purposefully, collections of U.S. citizens' conversations Glenn Sulmasy, Author

3 On your Google Doc… Write a position statement using the following format: H.L. Mencken is (correct/incorrect) in saying that, “the average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe” because…(list and explain your reasons). Your reasons can be from something you’ve read, something you’ve seen in a film, TV, etc., based on a historical event, or based on your own personal experiences. Must have two or more!

4 Start to think about 1984… One of the key themes in 1984 was lack of privacy. “Big Brother is Watching” What does “Big Brother” represent? What is the significance of the “thought police”? Of “thought crime”? Though the book was written in 1949, and television was a relatively new invention, Orwell predicted a future full of “Telescreens” – who operated the telescreens? What message was Orwell delivering to his audience? How is the book, and his message, relevant today?

5 Your Task… Meet with the people who read the same article as you.
Pick up a laptop. One group member must create a new “Google Slides” presentation Share it with your other group members, and share it with me. As a group, discuss the implications of your article. What are the main points/claims of the article? Why is the article important? What connection does it have to 1984? How could it relate to the “Freedom vs. Safety” debate? Answer the above questions on your Google Slides presentation Be prepared to present your work.
