U.S. General Services Administration Category Management Stephen Bartley Intro: Steve / Victor: George, Kathy, Shaloy, Sandra, Susannah, and Cheryl: As you know the federal government is undertaking CM as a means to become more efficient and customer-focused. GSA is taking the lead and will be introducing new initiatives on the road ahead. We see this as a win-win-win: customer, industry, and the federal government.

2 What is Category Management?
Category Management Defined Category Management is a purchasing approach where spending is organized into common categories and managed strategically. Category Management Elements: Identify, aggregate, and analyze spending by each category Understand customer needs, effective market research, shape acquisition strategy Share information and best practices with acquisition community, federal agencies, and industry partners Improve acquisition solutions Minimize acquisition redundancy The federal government will use these common categories to build subject matter expertise and to conduct market and data analysis, which leads to more informed spending and government-wide savings. Category Management is how the federal government acts as a single entity that benefits from coordinated, smarter purchasing.

4 Goals of Category Management:
Category Management Achieved FAS has four Category Management Goals: Become Category Management Experts Improve relationships by maximizing customer support and leveraging supplier partnerships Build better offerings that reduce unnecessary duplication; these offerings inform and maintain best-in-class solutions Increase GSA revenue, and achieve volume and administrative savings Gaging our success: FAS employees are recognized as trusted advisors FAS offerings are the go-to choice for customers The Common Acquisition Platform (CAP) is the government’s acquisition information hub FAS offerings are the preferred channel to market for our industry partners Significant reduction in contract duplication Historically GSA has focused on effectively managing the process of contracting, which is mission critical for GSA… …the next logical step is to introduce CMs and experts in the products and services of our categories
