2. China Influences Japan
Around 600 CE, Japan begins adopting Chinese culture
Japan needed to develop strong trade relationships & maintain peace with China because it is the most powerful region at the time
Confucianism, Taoism, & Buddhism begin influencing Japan
Used the Chinese written and spoken language
Taika Reforms - the movement to “China-fy” Japan

3. The Heian Period – Circa 800 CE
Buddhist monks became very powerful - they control of the government in Japan
The Japanese began rebelling against the Taika Reforms
People abandoned their Chinese influences & returned to traditional Japanese social and political control
Returned to writing in Japanese
Huge focus on loyalty, beauty, grace, good manners
Importance in fashion & wealth
Very little consideration for protection and control of the people or the island
An emperor controlled all of Japan from the capital, and all were to pledge loyalty to him

8. Switch to Feudalism
Kyoto – Heian Dynasty’s capital city. Beautiful and full of wealth, poetry, art, & fashion, but little attention was given to controlling areas outside Kyoto
Daimyos (wealthy families) realized the emperor had no real power at this point
Circa 900 CE, Shoguns gain power, and began to build fortresses (Shogunates) & armies to protect their own territories. Refused to continue pledging loyalty to the emperor.
Crime became commonplace in the countryside & even in Kyoto as the government declined. Commoners now sought out local rulers to protect them.
Unified Japan disappears due to the creation of shogunates and the violence and war between them. Japan now mirrors feudalism in Europe.
