Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus – reformers who wanted to give public lands to the poor as farms. They were both killed by the wealthy citizens. Gaius Marius – allowed poor people to join his army. His army was more loyal to him than Rome.

Lucius Sulla – also turned to his army for political support. Civil war broke out and Marius was defeated. Sulla declared himself dictator and used his position to punish his enemies. Spartacus – led a slave revolt.
