1 Momentum

2 Momentum All objects in motion have momentum. NO MOTION = NO MOMENTUM
Momentum – the product of an objects mass and velocity

3 Formula: Momentum = Mass X Velocity Units for momentum: Kg * m/s
Both Mass and Velocity are directly proportional to Momentum. The greater the mass, the greater the momentum. The greater the velocity, the greater the momentum Which has more momentum: 1. A 100 kg football player running at a speed of 2 m/s or a 60 kg football player running at a speed of 3 m/s? Calculate:

4 Conservation of Momentum
Law of conservation of momentum explains what happens will objects collide. Definition: The total momentum of any group of objects remains the same or is conserved unless outside forces act on the objects. Examples of outside forces: friction.

5 Collision with 2 moving objects – p. 399
Before the crash: Blue car momentum: ______________________ Green car momentum: _______________________ Total momentum of both cars: ______________ After the crash: Blue car momentum: _______________________ Green car momentum: _____________________ Total momentum of both cars: ___________________ During the crash, the back car transfers its momentum to the front car and vise versa. Momentum is conserved.

6 Collision with one moving object
Before the crash: Blue car momentum: ______________________ Green car momentum: _______________________ Total momentum of both cars: ______________ After the crash: Blue car momentum: _______________________ Green car momentum: _____________________ Total momentum of both cars: ___________________ During the crash, the back car transfers its momentum to the front car and vise versa. Momentum is conserved.

7 Two connected objects Before the crash: After the crash:
Blue car momentum: ______________________ Green car momentum: _______________________ Total momentum of both cars: ______________ After the crash: Blue car momentum: _______________________ Green car momentum: _____________________ Total momentum of both cars: ___________________ During the crash, the cars attach, and momentum is still conserved.
