2 How illness can affect social motives
Competing and social ranking Affiliative Cooperation Caregiving/ nurturing Sexual Care eliciting More reliant on other Skew in balance of give and take Emotional memories triggered Strengthened soothing/calmness, strength, courage, connectedness through successful navigation of threats Body/self less desirable, less able to compete for resources. Shame at bodily functions/changes and vigilance to rejection as ‘not good enough’ Reduction in competitiveness perspective about what really matters e.g. Competitive – Social comparison - competences of self relative to others, - pride vs shame Sexual – attractiveness Affiliative – sensitivity to distress empathy/sympathy, providing for needs, expressing love and caring, interest in care of others Define emotional memories Split into 2 slides Physical vulnerability ? You don’t need us – therapeutic power? I wonder whether you could include potential positive impact of illness related to the competing/social ranking motive - I recall that in the “In sickness and Health” paper they discuss how illness/health threat can sometimes lead to reduction in competitiveness between partners - and gaining a different/more healthy perspective about what really matters, potentially strengthening relationship – a minor point.
