Threats to folk culture Loss of traditional values Foreign media dominance Environmental impacts of popular culture Modifying nature Uniform landscapes Negative environmental impact

2 Globalization Actions or Processes that involve the entire world and result in making something worldwide in scope.

3 Problems from Global Popular Culture
The diffusion of popular may threaten the survival of traditional folk culture in many countries. Popular culture may be less responsive to the diversity of local environments and consequently may generate adverse environmental impacts.

4 The Trouble with Popular Culture
When people turn to popular culture, they may also turn away from traditional values. Dominance of popular culture can lead to the dominance of Western perspectives.

5 Opposition to Popular Culture
Fundamentalist Muslims oppose the widespread adoption of Western clothes, especially by women living in cities, as well as other social customs and attitudes typical of more developed countries.

6 Cultural Imperialism American television, like other media, presents characteristically American beliefs and social forms, such as upward social mobility, relative freedom for women, glorification of youth, and stylized violence.

7 Impact of Popular Culture on the Environment
The spatial organization of popular culture reflects the distribution of social & economic factors. In a global economy and culture, popular culture appears increasingly uniform.

8 Impact on the Landscape
Often, however, popular cultural forms are imposed or forced on the landscape rather than springing forth from it. Golf, with its modified topography, various grass lengths, artificial sand traps and water create artificial environments. The globalization of Fast-food restaurants has created uniform landscapes from Beijing to New York. Automobile models are similar across the globe, too.

9 Golf Courses in Metropolitan Areas
Fig. 4-16: The 50 best-served and worst-served metropolitan areas in terms of golf holes per capita, and areas that are above and below average.

10 More Negatives on the Environment
Some forms of popular culture deplete scarce natural resources while others pollute the landscape.
