Location: Clermont began as an Agricultural community called “Dip” centered around a post office.

In 1913 it was incorporated as the “Town of Clermont”
At that time, the Gainesville Northwestern Railroad Line ran right through Clermont (in front of the old hotel). It was a 35 mile line that ran from Gainesville through Clermont, Cleveland and almost to Helen. It was built because of the logging industry in the area. When the logging declined, the railroad line ended. In 1913 it was incorporated as the “Town of Clermont”

Interaction: How have people impacted the local environment? How has the local environment impacted the land? In Clermont’s history a total of 62 tornadoes have hit this region. In Clermont’s history hurricanes off the coast of Georgia and/or the Gulf Coast have brought storm damage to the region through strong winds. In these times of natural disasters, the local people have banded together to help one another with clean up and other needs. Under normal circumstances, much of the land around Clermont has been cleared for farming purposes and/or for building homes and businesses.

Gas stations and a variety of automobiles provide transportation of goods and people.
