Use it in a sentence and create a picture. Objective: SWBAT identify and use active verbs.

Identify verbs With a partner, choose a paragraph in the reading and underline all the verbs. Different pairs should take different paragraphs. Report to the class some of the verbs used in the paragraph. How are the verbs in the first paragraph different than the other paragraphs? Most of the verbs in the first paragraph could be called “passive.” Most of the verbs in the next three paragraphs are “active.” With the class look at the verbs in the first tow paragraphs and put each one into a category, either “passive” or “active.” Discuss the effect of these two types of verbs have on the story.

Active verbs In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing receiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active. [Thing doing action] + [verb] + [thing receiving action] Example:

Practice using active verbs to write about what you did today
Write five sentences using active verbs: [Thing doing action] + [verb] + [thing receiving action] Example: “Brad flinches at the water...”
