Day One Strategic Teaching Review/Overview Discussion of changes needed for planning of CCRS Analysis of a lesson: strategic, differentiated, CCRS Collaborative creation of a strategic lesson using CCRS and differentiation Day Two Identification of differences between units and lessons Analysis of Strategic Teaching and CCRS elements from various discipline video clips Collaboration to create units and lessons with CCRS

6 ONE Learning Outcome Decide what it is the students will be able to do TODAY as a result of this lesson. State the outcome in student friendly terms. “The first step to determining an outcome is to examine the course of study objective standard for the particular subject. Next, look for the accompanying objectives. Most importantly, decide on the daily outcome that will help students meet the standard. Finally, think about the verb used in the daily outcome and determine what assessment will clearly support mastery of this outcome.” 6

8 THREE Parts to a Strategic Lesson
Before During After “Just as you should eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day – each lesson should have three parts. Before sets the stage for the lesson, during enables students to engage in the text, and after provides opportunities to make connections and assess if the outcome of the lesson has been met. Strong, seamless connections among the three parts of a lesson are imperative.”

9 FOUR Steps to Explicit Instruction
I Do We Do Y’all Do The fourth ingredient for healthy literacy is the use of explicit instruction. The teacher models the skill and strategy (I Do). Then, the teacher and the students practice the skill and the strategy as a group (We Do). Next, the students work together using the skill/strategy (Y’all Do). After the teacher is sure the students can use the skill/strategy independently, then the students do so independently (I Do). These four ingredients in explicit instruction will provide gradual release of responsibility of the learning and should be done sequentially. You Do Self

“Five ingredients for active literacy are needed for healthy learning. Every day, students should be given opportunities to talk with each other, listen to each other, read and write in meaningful ways, and investigate content.”

16 Day Two Essential Question: How can we create and implement units and lesson plans that follow the new CCRS and utilize strategic teaching practices?

17 Before Compare a unit with a daily lesson. How are units created? What components make up units? T-Chart

18 During In small discipline groups, use unit format to create a common unit, including lessons, integrating CCRS and Strategic Teaching.

19 After Share the final unit product and process used, identifying standards, essential questions, and strategic teaching components included. Identify one lesson from the unit to share in detail with the whole group.
