1 Arizona Senate Bill 1070

2 Provisions -Requires a reasonable attempt to be made to determine the immigration status of a person during any legitimate contact made by an official or agency of the state or a county, city, town or political subdivision if reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the U.S -Allows a law enforcement officer, without a warrant, to arrest a person if the officer has probable cause to believe that the person has committed any public offense that makes the person removable from the U.S -Requires the person’s immigration status to be verified with the federal government pursuant to federal law.

WHY IT WAS IMPLEMENTED -Illegal aliens place an extreme economic burden on schools and medical care; costing tax payers millions of dollars. -Presumed loss of jobs Senator Pearce(bill sponsor) -Estimated 500,000 illegal aliens in Arizona and their alleged ties to crime

4 -Statistical studies state that the highest increases in immigration was between 1999 and 2000
-Interestingly, during this same period there was also the largest drop in homicides and robberies -Racial profiling
