Nutrition and Physical Activity Report Fall 2017

2 National School Breakfast and Lunch Program All Garrard County Schools were certified CEP beginning SY The School Nutrition Program is administered through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Kentucky Department of Education and the Garrard County School District. Comprehensive regulations must be followed for the school nutrition program to be funded. Garrard County School Nutrition Program provides the following: School Breakfast School Lunch Afterschool Snack Supper Summer Meal Program Catering

3 Menu Planning Menus are designed for specific age/grade levels and each has its own requirements for portion sizes, calories, and sodium levels. Total Fat <35% of calories from fat per item. Total Saturated Fat < 10% of calories from fat per item. Trans Fat 0 grams of trans fat are allowed. Total Sugars < 35% of weight of total item. (Certain exemptions apply to fruit)

4 Smart Snacks in Schools
Smart Snacks in schools is another way we are helping to improve the health of our students. Snack Guidelines are as follows. Window 1 – First window is from midnight the night before until 30 minutes after the last lunch period. While this window is open, no sale of food or beverage may take place except as part of the school nutrition program. Window 2 – The second window opens 30 minutes after the last lunch period ends and closes 30 minutes after the end of the official school day. While this window is open any food that is sold must meet all nutrition standards in the regulations. Window 3 – The third window opens 30 minutes after the end of the official school day and closes at midnight. During this window, there is no nutrient standards restricting what may be sold. No competitive foods may be sold or brought into the school cafeteria during the breakfast and/or lunch services. July 2015 USDA implemented strict guideline for snacks sold in schools. Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 Must be a whole grain rich product or Must have as the first ingredient a fruit, vegetable, a dairy product or a protein or Must be a combination food that contains at least ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetable or Must contain 10% of the Daily Value of one of the nutrients of public health concern in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Food Trucks are prohibited on campus during the School Breakfast and Lunch Services.

5 Plain water (non-caloric and without carbonation)
Nutrition Standards for Beverages All schools may sell: Plain water (non-caloric and without carbonation) Unflavored Low Fat Milk Unflavored or flavored fat free milk 100% fruit or vegetable juice Elementary size portions are limited to 8 ounces, while middle and high school may sell up to 12 ounce portions of juice and milk. All beverages must be caffeine free at the elementary and middle school levels. There is no maximum portion size for plain water. High school portion sizes and products must meet the following guidelines: Calorie free and contain less than 5 calories per 8 ounce or less than 10 calories per 20 ounce serving. Lower calorie beverages where 12 ounce or less portions with less than 40 calories per 8 ounces, or less than 60 calories per 12 ounces and contain no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. Beverages may contain caffeine

6 Dinner and Summer Meals Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
Dinner is served Monday – Thursday from 3:00- 5:00 at the Garrard Middle School. Kids ages 2 – 18 eat free of charge, adult meals are $3.50. Summer Meals (breakfast and lunch) are provided at locations throughout Garrard County. Meals are provided to children ages 2-18 free of charge, adult meals are $2.25 breakfast and $3.50 lunch. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is possible through an annual grant from the USDA. All schools receive funding through this program to offer more fresh fruits and vegetables. COMING SOON! Farm to School… Garrard County School Nutrition Program has applied for Farm to School funds to bring even more fresh fruits and vegetables to our schools beginning spring We are excited to work with our local farmers to bring additional fresh produce to our students and staff.

7 Garrard County Wellness Summary
The past year has been a very busy one. All School Nutrition Employees, including subs have acquired Level One School Nutrition and Food Safety Certification All school nutrition employees have participated in additional trainings and classes provided by the UK/Garrard Extension Services All schools now have updated cycle menus All schools have implemented smoothie and yogurt bars into the breakfast and lunch menus A new salad bar was placed and is available two days per week at Garrard Middle School A third line was added at Garrard Middle School to provide an additional entrée Increased funding for fresh fruits and vegetables has helped to improve selections at each of the schools Wellness Goals for Implement the Farm to School Program in all schools Increase nutrition education programs with assistance from the Garrard UK Extension Office, Food and Consumer Science Update recipes and menus, trainings to continue progress towards meeting guidelines Design and install a School Nutrition Page on Garrard County Schools website Increase Summer Feeding sites through additional partnerships Establish a Student – Community School Nutrition Committee Increase participation in School Wellness Committee meetings and activities
