5-year award begins July 2010 Overview

2 "The important thing is not to stop questioning
"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing." --Albert Einstein

3 Science is the search for, rather than the answer to our questions of how and why. -- The Right Question at the Right Time

4 IMSS Overview Welcome • Elements of Inquiry • Program Outcomes • 2 Week and Day 1 Agenda • Instructional Case

5 Triad Question What distinguishes inquiry science instruction from other science instruction? Characteristics / Examples Frayer Model

6

7 Inquiry Science is Student Centered
Student Responsibility for Learning The student’s role as a learner Students make decisions; identify where they need help; assist others learning; advance group knowledge Student Active Thinking How students engage with the content Students do intellectual work; generate ideas; use logic; make deductions; brainstorm; engage in active questioning; link ideas; use prior knowledge Student Motivation Student’s personal investment in the learning process Curiosity; persistence; concentration; focus

8 Essential Elements of Inquiry
From National Science Education Standards • Learner engages in scientifically oriented questions • Learner gives priority to evidence in responding to questions • Learner formulates explanations from evidence • Leaner connects explanations to scientific knowledge • Learner communicates and justifies explanations

10 Increase Science Content Knowledge
Summer Institute Outcomes Increase Science Content Knowledge Understand and Apply Essential Elements of Inquiry Collaboratively develop an instructional case (1-2 lessons) Teachers/student collaboratively engaged

11 Instructional Case Includes
Detailed teaching guide / lesson plans that will be shared Essential elements of inquiry Literacy strategies Assessments Collaboratively developed and peer reviewed.

12 "One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind for the examinations, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect on me that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year."

Introduction to the IMSS Instructional Case Template (image)

14 The Instructional Case is divided into 5 Sections
Subtitle • Bulleted Text • Bulleted Text • Bulleted Text

15 Section 1 Identify the Science Content Standard(s)
that the lesson(s) will address [We will discuss how to unpack these standards on Day 2.] Copy the standard(s) number, letter, and words onto the template Draft a generative question that will pique the interest of the students, and drive the lesson(s)

16 Section 2 Unpack the Standard(s) and determine
the lesson objectives for both content and process skills [We will discuss how to do this on Day 2.]

17 Section 3 Select appropriate Formative and
Summative Assessments to determine if students are learning the lesson objectives. Performance Assessments should be considered as choices for formative and/or summative purposes. [We will discuss different types of Assessments to consider on Day 5.]

18 Section 4 Plan lessons to include the Essential Elements of Inquiry.
[Introduced on Day 1, and discussed throughout the institute.] Your lesson plans can be in a variety of formats (Madeline Hunter, Gradual Release of Responsibility, etc.)

19 Section 5 Identify the Instructional Strategies
that will improve access to the lesson(s) by all students (English Language Learners, G.A.T.E., Learning Disabled, etc. Literacy strategies will also be shared. [Many strategies will be introduced and discussed throughout the institute.]
