1 Title of notes: Introduction to rocks pg. 10 & 11 RS
Goal for lesson: write on self assessment sheet I can name the three types of rocks.

2 Bell work Pick a science word and write the definition. Chapter 4
Check calendar! Check student vue! Goal for lesson: write on self assessment sheet I can name the three types of rocks.

3 I’ll know I’ve got it when…
Learning target I can name the three types of rocks. Today I am… exploring the three types of rocks. So that I’ll be able to… understand that Earth processes can change rocks over time. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can correctly name the three types of rocks.

4 ROCKS A naturally formed aggregate of mineral matter constituting a significant part of the Earth's crust.

5 The Earth’s crust is made up of mostly rock.
Rocks are a solid mixture of one or more minerals.

6 Rocks are an important natural resource
Rocks are an important natural resource. Early humans used rocks as hammers to make other tools.

7 Rocks are also used to make buildings, roads, and monuments.
Building – Marble from Colorado, statue – Marble from Georgia 98’ tall

8 Pyramids of Giza – Giza Machu Picchu - Peru plateau near Cairo
Pyramids of Giza – limestone, Machu Picchu – Mostly granite, but some schist, quartzite and metamorphic conglomerations. 455’ tall

9 How does studying rocks help science?
Helps to answer questions about the history of the Earth and the solar system. The fossils that some rocks contain provide clues about life that lived billions of years ago.

10 Group work: Classifying objects
With your group, classify the following objects into groups with similar characteristics. - apple - banana - lemon - cactus - red ball - coconut - brick - sunglasses - garden hose - hat - pineapple - red pepper

11 Scientists classify all rocks into three main types:
Rock Classification Scientists classify all rocks into three main types: Sedimentary Rock Igneous Rock Metamorphic Rock

12 What is inside of the rock.
Composition of a rock Gneiss = quartz + feldspar What is inside of the rock.

13 Example of Composition:Limestone
95% Calcite 5% Aragonite

14 Texture of a rock The texture of a rock is determined by the sizes, shapes, and positions of the mineral grains in which it is made.

15 Rock Cycle Rock types are all connected in a cycle of formation, change, and destruction which we call the Rock Cycle.
