Why would non- slaveholders in the south support the institution of slavery?

Boston 1850 Questions: To whom do you think this image is addressed, and is the audience likely to be convinced that slaves enjoy more freedom than English laborers? Why do you think the artist chose to compare the condition of slaves with that of English, not American free laborers?

3 groups: Vesey’s Rebellion (1822), Nat Turner’s Rebellion (1831), and Amistad (1840) Questions: What events led to this particular slave uprising? What was the immediate effect for individuals involved with this particular uprising? What was the long-term effect of this uprising?

Why do you believe songs like these became central to slave culture? Re there any connections you can make between these songs and how songs have impacted other historical periods?

List two significant ways in which slaves resisted against the condition of slavery. Explain how slave resistance and African-American culture were intertwined during this time period.
