1 World Friendship Fund You might have heard of the World Friendship Fund (WFF) before but I want to take a little time today to explain exactly what the WFF is and how these funds are utilized.

2 World Friendship Fund What is the WFF? Part of history
4/4/2019 8:56 AM What is the WFF? Part of history At the end of World War II, Scouts of all ages in war-torn countries had lost everything and needed help to restart their Scouting programs. In response to these Scouts’ needs, the BSA established a fund called World Friendship Fund. Since then more than $11 million has been donated by BSA Scouts eager to support worldwide Scouting in a personal way. This photo is of a Scout troop in 1946 just after World War II at an orphanage in Yorkshire, England called St. Charles House. World Friendship Fund © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 4 World Friendship Fund What is the WFF? Part of history
4/4/2019 8:56 AM What is the WFF? Part of history A service project An international Scouting activity BSA is just one of the 170 National Scout Organizations recognized by WOSM. That’s over 50 million Scouts we can call our Friends. Regardless of the NSO in which they participate, all Scouts around the world learn and agree to live by the Scout Oath and Law. Core to the Scout Oath is the charge to “help other people at all times” and the Scout Law reminds us that a Scout is Helpful, Friendly, Courteous and Kind among other attributes. When units participate in the WFF, Scouts become a part of a worldwide Good Turn by helping others. They develop an awareness of and a concern for the Scouts in other countries. World fellowship is realized when Scouts learn about an help others through the Scouting spirit. World Friendship Fund © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 5 World Friendship Fund How to support WFF? Scout Collections
4/4/2019 8:56 AM How to support WFF? Scout Collections Camps and Training World Fellowship Night Annual Collections If everyone gives a little bit, together we can give a lot. A Great way to contribute is to support collections hosted by local Scouts These collections can be organized during, roundtable meetings, den and pack meetings, summer camping programs, blue and gold banquets, camporees, or any other Scout activity. One very popular way that the WFF is supported is through gifts from summer camps, training sessions and funds collected during Scouts’ own services. It can also be fun for a Pack to host a World Fellowship Night to collect funds. Scouts can research a different country and share information about Scouting in that NSO. They can play games, lean a few words or phrases of a new language, and eat food from the countries they researched. Every year the Scout Shops holds an annual collection encouraging all Scouts to give a dollar. If you or your unit are encouraged by the leadership of your local Scout Shop, you too could participate in hosting an annual collection for the World Friendship Fund. 12 United States Fund for International Scouting
4/4/2019 8:56 AM United States Fund for International Scouting Where do WFF funds go? grant proposals NSO & WOSM Regional approval USFIS Approval February, May, October You might be wondering where all of these collected WFFs go or how Scouting benefits from your contribution. The short answer is grants, let me explain: Any NSO recognized by WOSM can submit a grant proposal to receive funds for projects that enhance Scouting in their organization. Even before the Grant proposal is recieved by the BSA it must be reviewed and approved by that NSO’s International Commissioner or Chief Scout It is then sent to one of the 6 World Regions managed by WOSM and there it has to be reviewed and approved by the Regional Director. Finally it is sent to the BSA where, every February, May and October a committee called The United Stated Fund for International Scouting (USFIS) meets to review submitted grant proposals and vote on their approval. 13 United States Fund for International Scouting
4/4/2019 8:56 AM United States Fund for International Scouting Large Percentage of scouts Approved grants must validate appropriations of funds What are the kinds of projects approved by the USFIS: It is the goal of the USFIS to reach as many Scouts as possible with the WFF contributions therefore, they seek to approve grants that assist a large percentage of the Scouts in the NSO and projects that affect the welfare and enhancement of Scouting for the entire NSO. It is also very important to the USFIS that these funds are used for Scouting therefore the NSO must validate the use of these funds toward the project on their original grant proposal by submitting interim and final grant reports. 14 World Friendship Fund What is not supported?
4/4/2019 8:56 AM What is not supported? Units cannot request specific fund distribution Unrecognized scouts or international projects There are somethings that are not approved by the USFIS Because the USFIS Committee wants to make the biggest impact with these collections, the funds collected CANNOT be sent to a specific NSO based on the request of BSA members. For example if a Scout hosts a WFF collection they cannot request that these funds be sent to a specific NSO for disaster relief, or Scout uniforms, etc. While it is a noble act to want to help a specific Scouting need; a larger amount can be given to the NSO if funds from many collections are sent after the USFIS approves a grant proposal. If a Scout really wants to help a specific need they can direct the NSO to the International Department of the BSA so they can begin the grant process. WFF funds will not go to unrecognized Scouting programs or other non-Scouting international development projects. The USFIS Committee wants to ensure that Scouts around the world are the ones benefiting form these contributions so, if an unrecognized Scouting group submits a grant request they will be denied but encourage to take the proper steps to become recognized members of WOSM so they can share in our Scouting Fellowship. 15 World Friendship Fund A Few Grant Recipients
4/4/2019 8:56 AM A Few Grant Recipients Interamerican Leadership Training Some of the recipients of the WFF grants include Assistance in hosting the annual Interamerican Leadership Training ILT for 34 NSOs in North, Central, and South America. ILT is 6-day course of leadership and team building skills designed to improve the skill level of young Scout leaders from the Interamerican Region of WOSM. Each NSO in the Interamerican Region is invited to send two Scouts to attend the training. Since its start in 2013 NSOs in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Columbia, and Peru have used the tools their participants gained at ILT to hold their own national trainings much like BSA’s NYLT. We are beginning to see improvement in Scouting efforts in the Interamerican Region due to the contributions of this grant and the ILT. World Friendship Fund © 2007 Microsoft Corporation.
