1 LAB RECAP: Spot, Spot...

2 CaSO4 HCl Insoluble, white ppt soluble MgSO4 H2SO4 Soluble soluble Na2SO4 H2CO3 Soluble Creates CO2 gas

3 Na2CO3 Sodium carbonate H2CO3 Hydrogen carbonate BUBBLES! CaSO4 Calcium sulfate CaCl2 Calcium chloride White ppt! MgSO4 & H2SO4 MgSO4 Magnesium sulfate NOTHING!

4 NOTES #6: Kinetics WCHS Chemistry

5 HOW CAN YOU MAKE A SUGAR CUBE DISSOLVE QUICKLY IN WATER?
There are SIX ways to make this happen! You can proabbly give me THREE before we even get started! _________________________________________________

6 KINETICS! = the speed (a.k.a rate) of a chemical reaction

7 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Physical State Solids with greater surface area (= in smaller pieces) react faster!

8 HOW TO LIGHT A LOG ON FIRE?
USE KINDLING!!

9 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Physical State Solids with greater surface area (= in smaller pieces) react faster! Ex: Small twigs burns faster than a large piece of wood.

10 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Stirring Speeds up the motion of the particles More movement = more collisions! Particles find each other and react faster! Ex: Stirring sugar to dissolve it in water

11 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Temperature Speeds up the motion of the particles More movement = more collisions! Particles find each other and react faster! FUN FACT: Every 10o C you increase the temperature, DOUBLES the rate of the reaction!

12 EX: Why we used a hot water bath in some of our experiments!

13 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Concentration of Reactants (Concentration = how much STUFF you have) Increased concentration = faster reaction More molecules = more collisions happening = faster reaction! Ex: 1 M H2SO4 vs. 3 M H2SO4 in our Spot Spot lab

14 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Catalyst Makes reactions go faster by decreasing activation energy Catalysts speed up a reaction WITHOUT being used/ a part of the reaction. If you have 5 g of catalyst before, you will have 5 g after also.

15 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE KINETICS
Inhibitor = a substance that slows down the rate of a reaction Why would we want to do this?

16 Slow down the rate of food spoilage!
FOOD PRESERVATIVES! Slow down the rate of food spoilage!

17

18 Hot tea will get to 100C VERY fast
Sun tea won’t get that hot, so needs LONGER time to make up for low temp
