LOCATION: Geographers study a place by finding its location. There are two types of location: Absolute location: latitude and longitude or street address Relative location: where it is located in relation to another known place Ex: Woodworth Middle School’s address is 4951 Ternes Street Ex: Dearborn is west of Detroit Woodworth Middle School is located at 49°19’N latitude and 83°11’W longitude Woodworth Middle School is south of Ford Road

3 LOCATION Example: Lansing, the capital of Michigan, is located Northwest of Detroit

4 The 5 Themes of Geography
PLACE: Place refers to the physical and human characteristics of an area– it describes what it is like. This includes: What is the land like (land and water features)? What the climate and vegetation is like? What buildings or man-made structures are there? How many people live there? What is the culture like? What language is spoken there?

5 PLACE EXAMPLE: The Eiffel Tower is in France.
The Rocky Mountains are in the United States.

REGION: Areas of the world that have common characteristics. How it is identified: Common climate Physical feature Common language Common national government

7 REGION EXAMPLE: The Great Lakes Region is an example because the U.S. and Canada both border the lakes and both share in using the water and resources that the lakes provide.
