2 Do Now Based on your computer usage, what types of data can be stored on your computer and where can it be stored?

3 How does the hard drive operate?
Aim How does the hard drive operate?

4 Objectives Explain how the hard drive operate Identify various input and output devices Name three peripherals and explain how they are used? Identify the various devices on which data is stored Describe ways in which digital data is both volatile and stable

5 What are the different types of storage on a computer?
Primary and volatile storage Secondary and Non-volatile RAM (Random Access Memory) Primary storage is volatile (stored in electrical charges that are continuously being modified and rewritten) It is temporary data that is lost when the computer is turned off. Flash drives, external drives, CD- ROMS Internal hard drive on computer Permanent method of storage can store large quantities of data on a long term basis when the computer is turned off

6 How does the Hard Drive work?
Magnetic platters store data using strings of 0s and 1s. (Binary) Head writes and reads data to and from the platters, Platters rest on the spindle (function is to rotate the platters) The actuator arm moves the head as it reads or writes data on the platter.

7 Writing on the hard drive
Head reads and write to and from the hard drives platter through the use of electromagnetic current. The head never touches the disc (few nanometers away from it) When drive is powered it will spin Rate spins varies – 5400, revolutions per minute (RPM) – the higher the RPM the faster the drive will spin

8 How does a Hard drive store Data?
Data stored in series of concentrated circles. Files to right are fragmented If we were to defragment the drive, computer will speed up because there is no longer a need to look for all the pieces of those files

9 Separated Colored pieces are now grouped together and are continuous.
To Defragment your Hard disk follow these instructions.

10 Hard drive structure Tracks are concentrated circles made up of individual Sectors. Groups of sectors that are not a full rings are clusters

11 Task Research and explain the different divisions or sectors that make up the platter of a hard drive.

12 What is meant by the term File Path?
